Yield = annual dividend per share ÷ current share price. A trailing dividend total and a forward (declared) rate can give different yields, know which one you are entering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is dividend yield?

Annual dividend per share divided by the current share price, expressed as a percentage. It tells you the income rate a new dollar buys at today's price.

What is the difference between trailing and forward yield?

Trailing yield uses the dividends actually paid over the past 12 months. Forward yield annualizes the most recently declared payment. They differ whenever the payout has changed recently, and quoted yields you see online may use either.

Is a higher yield better?

Not by itself. Yield rises when the price falls, so an unusually high yield can mean the market doubts the payout will be sustained. Yield is a starting point, not a quality measure.
